A shooter released in 2026 can look like a 1930s cartoon. Mouse: P.I. For Hire puts a private investigator in a world of hand-drawn characters and big-band jazz, and it feels right at home alongside older FPS campaigns that tried something just as distinctive. Think of the first descent into Rapture in BioShock Remastered, or the moment a firefight in Doom Eternal forces you to rethink which demon to go after first.

These are PC shooters with substantial campaigns you can play solo. Some follow a straight route through carefully staged missions. Others give you a world to explore and a reason to check what lies beyond the next hill. Where a review gives a useful playtime, we've included it as an estimate.

Find a Campaign for the Time You Have

Start with Titanfall 2. Its compact story fits a weekend and has room for wall runs, mech battles and some of the most inventive levels in the genre. If you're in a different mood, try one of these.

  • Atmosphere. Follow the Aurora across a hostile landscape in Metro Exodus.
  • Fast action. Keep moving and feed your arsenal in Doom Eternal.
  • A longer stay. Spend time chasing loot and experimenting with builds in Borderlands 2.

Jack Cooper can sprint across a wall, leap over a squad and land beside a walking tank. That's the rhythm ofTitanfall 2, a tightly paced campaign about a rifleman and his Titan, BT. Reviews put the story at roughly five to seven hours,.

One mission sends you through a factory that builds entire houses. Floors and walls move down the assembly line as you fight your way through, and the next piece of cover might be halfway to becoming a living room.

The Aurora is both your way out of Moscow and the place you come back to after a dangerous trip for supplies. Metro Exodus follows Artyom and his crew through wide, explorable regions and tight interior missions. GameSpot's PC reviewer spent around 20 hours with the game, so leave room for detours.

Out on the Volga, the route you take can matter as much as the gun you carry. A trip by boat brings you close to flooded buildings and the unsettling shapes moving beneath the water.

Every demon is part of your supply plan in Doom Eternal. A chainsaw kill refills ammunition, a glory kill restores health, and the shoulder flamethrower helps replenish armor. The campaign teaches you to switch weapons and move through crowded arenas while keeping track of what you need next.

A Revenant's shoulder launchers are tempting targets, especially when it's firing from across the arena. Knock them out and you can turn your attention to the demon blocking your escape route while you dash toward the next pickup.

The first descent in BioShock Remastered is worth taking slowly. Rapture rises out of the dark ocean in a haze of neon, and its flooded corridors tell you how badly the city has gone wrong. The campaign mixes gunfights with plasmids, which let you use electricity, fire and other powers alongside conventional weapons.

A Big Daddy changes the mood of a room before the fight even starts. You can hear the weight of its footsteps as it guides a Little Sister past the wreckage of an art deco hallway.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection puts six Halo games together on PC, each with a solo campaign. Reach offers a doomed military campaign, while the original Combat Evolved sends you onto a ring with large outdoor fights and room to put vehicles to use. The collection can keep you busy for several weekends.

Combat Evolved Anniversary has a neat trick. Switch between its classic and updated graphics and you can watch an entire room change, right down to the textures on the walls and the light across the floor.

B.J. Blazkowicz wakes up in a world where the Nazis won, andWolfenstein: The New Order follows his return to a resistance that's barely hanging on. A mission can give you time to hunt a commander quietly, then let you cut loose with a gun in each hand. The campaign has a clear route and quiet scenes to give its characters a life beyond the firefights.

The alternate history gets wonderfully strange. The resistance eventually sends B.J. to a Nazi base on the Moon, where the white corridors look ordinary.

Jack Pepper investigates corruption in a city that looks hand-drawn in black ink.Mouse: P.I. For Hire draws on 1930s animation for a solo detective campaign with cartoon guns, expressive enemies and big-band jazz. It brings something unusual to retro shooting, with a mystery to follow between fights.

The rubber-hose animation does more than decorate the levels. Weapons and enemies move with the same exaggerated bounce as the characters, so a chaotic room full of gunfire still feels like it belongs in a vintage cartoon.

Jason Brody's story takes you across tropical islands, with hunting and side activities there when you want a longer stay.

The wildlife can ruin a careful plan in seconds. Open a cage at the right moment and a tiger can rush into the compound, leaving the guards to deal with a problem of their own.

Instead of following one soldier across the war,Battlefield 1 breaks its solo campaign into War Stories. You move between different fronts and roles, from the crew of a British tank to a Bedouin fighter working alongside Lawrence of Arabia. That structure makes it easy to play one story in a sitting.

Through Mud and Blood shows how vulnerable a tank crew can be. As the heavy vehicle pushes through the fog, infantry can disappear from view and even a stretch of muddy ground starts to feel like dangerous territory.

Johnny Turbo has a chainsaw where most people have a shin. In Turbo Overkill, sliding can shred enemies as you cross the room, and the finished cyberpunk campaign has the space to build on that trick. The levels let you attack at speed through crowded streets and industrial corridors.

Movement gets even wilder once the grappling hook comes into play. It lets you reach points above the street and carry momentum across spaces that first look like they were built to keep you on the ground.

A short walk can become a whole expedition inS.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. You set out across the Zone with limited supplies, keep an eye on your gear and decide when to stray. The main quest gives the trip direction, but detours make it a much bigger time commitment than a linear campaign.

An anomaly field turns exploration into something more deliberate. Throw a bolt to see where the danger is, then pick your steps through distorted air as your detector tells you an artifact is close.

The story changes right in front of you when someone questions the details. Silas can revise the account mid-scene, and the level adjusts to his new version like a campfire story rewritten in real time.

The 2019Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot has a concentrated military campaign built around staged encounters. Missions change perspective and pace as the story moves between covert operations and large firefights. It's a good fit when you want a directed action story you can finish without spending weeks clearing a map.

Clean House is the moment that best captures its tension. You climb a dark stairwell with a small squad and clear one floor at a time, with night vision revealing just enough to make every doorway feel uncertain.

A locked door is the start of a problem worth solving aboard Talos I. Prey blends first-person shooting with the freedom of an immersive sim. The space station opens up as you explore, and you can spend a long time following its crew's stories or hunting for tools that give you another way into a room.

The GLOO Cannon is especially clever. Its foam can stop an attacker long enough to buy you time, then set against a wall in solid lumps you can climb to reach a ledge.

Detroit's streets are full of small problems that would make poor targets for a rocket launcher. RoboCop: Rogue City puts investigations and conversations between its heavier firefights, so you spend time on patrol as well as shooting through gangs. RoboCop moves with deliberate weight, and the Auto-9 is the weapon that best matches it.

His targeting vision captures the character in a flash. Scan a scene, see threats highlighted and watch the contrast between the slow walk into the room and the sudden, brutal bursts that follow.

A staff can be a perfectly good stand-in for a rocket launcher. Amid Evil builds seven fantasy episodes around magical weapons, with each setting giving you a new space to figure out. The Celestial Claw takes its name seriously. It sends little planets flying at your enemies, a ridiculous sight that fits right in with the vast, brightly colored architecture behind each fight.

Crysis Remastered is at its best when the island gives you room to plan a route, use the Nanosuit's cloak and decide where you want the shooting to start. The solo story moves from a rescue mission into stranger territory as the threat on the islands grows.

The suit makes a narrow escape as satisfying as a clean attack. Cloak to cross a road, slip through vegetation and use armor when the quiet approach suddenly stops being quiet.

Miss the beat and a perfectly aimed shot loses some of its force. Metal: Hellsinger is a rhythm shooter where attacks land harder when you play in time. The eight campaign levels took Windows Central's reviewer just over four hours, with score chasing and better timing giving you reasons to come back.

The music grows as you build momentum, until vocals enter and the track reaches full intensity. Getting there while keeping enemies away makes a good run feel like you're performing the song with your weapons.

Pandora is a good place to spend a few weeks tinkering with guns. Borderlands 2 has a substantial campaign you can play alone, with skill trees and gear that let you steer each Vault Hunter toward a particular style. Handsome Jack keeps the story moving while side quests give you ample excuses to explore.

Weapon manufacturers are part of the fun. A Tediore reload can send the old gun flying like a grenade, so an everyday action becomes a way to finish the enemy you were just shooting.

21. Dusk

•

The early farms in Dusk look simple until you notice how well they hide an ambush. The solo campaign runs across three episodes, with quick movement and clever layouts that keep its retro fights lively. Its low-detail art gives the darkness enough space to suggest something worse than whatever you're about to see.

The later levels get stranger than the rural opening suggests. Familiar architecture starts to lose its grip on reality, and the route through a room can be just as unsettling as the creatures waiting there.

Colt has eight targets and a day that keeps starting over. Deathloop makes the campaign a puzzle spread across the island of Blackreef, with clues gathered over repeated visits. Gunfire can get you out of a failed approach, but learning how people move and where they gather is what gets you closer to escaping.

The most satisfying change happens when separate leads become one plan. An afternoon visit teaches you something that rearranges an evening encounter, and a crowd of targets starts to look like a schedule you can exploit.

The wrecked resort world is practically a catalog of bad places to stand. Yank an opponent toward you, put a boot into them and watch the score pop when a nearby hazard finishes the job.

The ruined streets in Terminator: Resistance turn the Future War glimpsed in the early films into a full solo story. As a resistance fighter, you search abandoned buildings, craft supplies and work out which machines you can fight. Hacking and stealth are especially appealing when a patrol has better weapons than you do.

A Terminator encounter feels most threatening when you see it coming and still have to pass nearby. The metallic footsteps and red eyes make a recognizable enemy feel dangerous at the scale of an ordinary soldier.

A Soviet research island is the setting for Singularity, a focused campaign that uses time manipulation to change the way you solve problems. Guns handle the straightforward fights. An experimental device lets you age enemies and objects, and the story pushes you through the consequences of an experiment that went disastrously wrong.

The most memorable uses can happen outside a fight. A ruined piece of equipment becomes useful when you reverse what years have done to it, and the path forward appears where there was only scrap.

The bolter makes that role feel right. Its chunky shots cut through crowded rooms, and the contrast between nimble movement and the weight of your armored character is part of what gives every charge its punch.

A civil defense shelter beneath a Prague metro station sets the tone forHrot. The campaign imagines a disaster in 1980s Czechoslovakia and sends you through drab concrete spaces, with fast retro combat and a sense of humor that feels at home in the gloom. The setting is a large part of the appeal.

The small details make the place feel specific. A period pistol and a useless gas mask say more about the mood than a speech, especially when the next door leads deeper into the brown darkness.

The Slipgates tie those different places together. Step through one and the familiar machinery of a base can give way to wet stone and a monster that feels like it belongs far below ground.

Gordon Freeman begins with a commute and ends up fighting his way out of a ruined laboratory. Black Mesa rebuilds the original Half-Life campaign with updated environments and an expanded final stretch. Xen is the biggest reason for returning fans to play this version. The remake gives the alien world more room, and stepping out into that landscape makes the battered hallways back at the facility feel very far away.

Pick the Fight You Want Tonight

Titanfall 2 is the easiest place to start if you want a complete story over the weekend. Choose Metro Exodus when you want room to slow down and explore, or try Doom Eternal when you'd rather spend the night dodging demons and switching weapons. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger fits when you're in the mood for a Western with a quick draw and a narrator who loves an embellishment.
